The 17th Annual LAP conference was held August 22-27, 2010 in Orlando, Florida at the Doubletree Universal Studios.  Our theme is Labor working together. I was very excited this year to see hundreds of unions from the firefighters of NewYork down to the iron workers, steel workers, pipefitters, and of course the EAP reps from 22 airlines.

This conference gives the EAP a chance to network with other unions that handle the same problems and issues that we handle everyday. Some of the issues that we covered this week; Hoarding:Why all this stuff? a very powerful  talk by Patrick McGrath , PhD director Center for Anxiety and Obessive and compulsive disorders.  Also seen on the TV show Hoarders.

Alcoholic? Our Perceptions, and Campaign Against Human Trafficking, was the most powerful of all of the speakers for that day.  Human Trafficking generates of $32 billion annually for organized crime.  Each year over 2million women and children are sold as commodities.  One victim is trafficked across international borders every minute. Victims of trafficking for the sex trade can be girls or boys, women or men.  There are many things to look for;

*may be accompanied by someone who controls their every movement

*have injuries or signs of physical abuse

*appear malnourished

*be fearful of authority figures, especially law enforcement

Flight Attendants can make a difference by being observant of passengers on board your flights , trust instincts; if something doesn't feel right, take the time to investigate.  If you are at the airport and suspect that a passenger might be a victim please call HUMAN TRAFFICKING HOTLINE 1-888-373-7888.
